Amber
A fossil resin of golden hue with, more rarely, some bluish tints. It is hard, but softens when immersed in a hot oil bath. Organic solvents, such as alcohol and acetone, will dissolve it, and advantage is taken of this fact to use it as varnish, but instances are comparatively rare. Amber can be cleaned by washing in soap and water. Broken surfaces of an article made from amber are best joined with celluloid cement. See Cements. Artificial amber is sometimes made from copal resin, camphor, and turpentine. This, however, will be dissolved by ether which does not affect amber. Pressed amber is manufactured by fusing small pieces together.
