Bonhams “The Greek Sale” 20 May 2008 London

Footnotes Exhibited: Inspired by the medal athletic ceremonies, Papoutsidis creates for and delivers to the unknown viewer, who participates in them, irongraphed gifts. He remains loyal to the festive character of the ceremony by submerging in the world of symbols - a world, whose purity and universal character fits with the glorious spirit and sanctity of life. Thus, in this lot, he uses the snake, which is the symbol of the universe and of universal knowledge. Crowning it, the five stars represent the re-birth, the revival, the creation of a new beginning. On the other end of the spectrum, the prickly pear tree symbolizes the cruelty of nature and its creations. Finally, the herringbone fish patterns are the symbols of the destruction and death of our environment.
