LITERATURE: "Composition in black and green" dates from the late 1960's, during which the artist developed his mature abstract style. Using a title that could equally apply to a musical composition the artist reveals himself as a composer bringing out the inner musical quality of his work. On a solid structure of abstract lines the impulsive green spots leave every figurative past behind. Contopoulos was the first Greek artist to turn to abstract expressionism in the early 50's. His approach often reflects - rather than negates - his thorough understanding of ancient Greek art gained through his long affiliation with the National Archaeological Museum. His art does not distance him from man; on the contrary it is a contemplation on contemporary issues and universal values. | |
