A work from the artist’s mature period, this lot has various stylistic affinities with works from Picasso’s pre-Cubist period, which the artist must have seen during the years he spent in Paris, from 1930 to 1935. This was also the period when Regos executed his most important and inspired works. The simplified contours and broadly modelled forms of the women and the children, as well as the sense of detachment of the two women, owe a debt to Picasso but Regos has transformed these elements into a very personal idiom. The emphasis on the frontal plane, the elimination of detail and the reduction of forms to their basic contours, reflect the artist’s roots in ancient Greek vase painting.
