A painter committed to art’s social value and a prominent figure in art education, Dimosthenis Kokkinidis produces powerful works that expertly combine imaginative figuration with sophisticated abstraction. The Painter belongs to his Trial of Transcendence series (1992-2000), a body of work in which the artist concludes his discourse on human existence. Through his continuous probing into man’s relationship with the social, natural and metaphysical spheres, Kokkinidis established a different approach in handling the human figure and the world: in contrast to the solid surfaces of the surrounding ‘cosmos’, the human figure - in this case the painter himself - is almost always modelled with a more fragile brushstroke.1 The final outcome, as perceptively pointed out by Professor D. Maronitis, “is a contemplative and generous visual premise. There are neither agonizing cries nor bursts of lyrical euphoria; rather, a promise of serenity and calmness after a storm that has passed - for good? - one that seems to have cleansed the dusty colours of our soiled world.”2
