Echoing the elemental simplicity and harmonious beauty of the Cycladic statuettes, this female bust is a sum of stylized, near-geometric shapes translated into an ensemble of organic forms with considerable aesthetic appeal. A prominent postwar sculptor with an illustrious career in France and strong showing in prestigious European institutions, Philolaos developed a combination of constructivist motifs and freely elaborated forms, endowing his work with subtle surrealist overtones.
