A mature classicist with a flawless technique, Nikos Perantinos pursued a vision of harmony and unity rooted in ancient Greek sculpture. “With his principal ideals shaped by classical ethos, he belongs to the last representatives of a generation of sculptors who had a thorough understanding of ancient Greek sculpture and, without slavishly imitating it, worked according to its principles and timeless canons.”1 In this piece, Perantinos achieves balance of volumes and fluidity of contours, while the roughness of texture and freedom in the moulding of the rider deviate from the rigid academic tenets and breathe life to the whole piece, capturing the robust, earthy vigour of the legendary chieftain.
